Chapter 29: The Letter From the Past
On the tenth anniversary of my exile, my mother gave me a letter.
“Your father wrote this before he died.”
I stared at the envelope.
My hands trembled.
I opened it.
“Elara,
If you are reading this, then I failed to protect you.
But I need you to understand something.
You were never weak.
You were never cursed.
You were never a mistake.
The world may tell you that power belongs to those who can control others.
Don’t believe it.
Real power is being able to destroy someone…
and choosing not to.
Your mother will protect you.
Kael will protect you.
But eventually, you must protect yourself.
And when that day comes, don’t become like the people who hurt us.
Become better.
That is how you win.
Love,
Father.”
I couldn’t stop crying.
Kael found me beneath the old tree.
He sat beside me.
I gave him the letter.
He read it.
Then he looked at me.
“Your father was right.”
“About what?”
“You won.”
I smiled.
“Not because I defeated them.”
“No.”
He took my hand.
“Because they didn’t turn you into them.”
I rested my head against his shoulder.
For the first time…
I finally understood my father’s final lesson.
My story had never been about revenge.
It had been about becoming free.
