Chapter 10: Distance and Realization
The following two weeks were a blur of cold professionalism and unspoken heartache. Clara made a conscious decision to move her work back to her
independent studio in Soho, avoiding any late-night working sessions at the Vance Global Headquarters. Communication between her and Ethan was
strictly restricted to formal emails and brief, professional video calls regarding the campaign rollout.
Ethan didn’t push her boundaries, respecting her need for space, but his presence was felt everywhere. Every morning, a bouquet of fresh white
lilies—her favorite—arrived quietly at her studio desk without a card. Every evening, an executive car waited outside her studio to ensure she got
home safely in the London traffic, though she refused to ride in it most days.
Despite the emotional distance, the European campaign launched across Paris, Milan, and Berlin to unprecedented acclaim. Billboard displays
featuring Clara’s subtle, elegant designs covered high-end shopping districts, and fashion critics hailed it as a masterpiece of modern luxury
branding.
To celebrate the massive success, the European Art Council organized an exclusive dinner gala in Paris at the prestigious Grand Palais. Clara was
invited as the guest of honor to receive the European Design Excellence Award.
The night of the event in Paris was breathtaking. The Grand Palais was filled with international art directors, journalists, and fashion icons.
Clara wore a sleek, midnight-blue silk gown, looking radiant yet quietly somber. As she stood on the main stage under the glittering chandeliers
holding her crystal award, applause filled the grand hall.
“Thank you,” Clara said into the microphone, looking out at the crowd of hundreds. “This award represents the belief that true elegance doesn’t
need to shout to be heard. It requires trust, vision, and the courage to look beyond surface appearances.”
Her eyes scanned the audience, and her heart stopped for a beat.
Standing at the very back of the hall, half-hidden in the shadows near the grand entrance, was Ethan. He was dressed in a classic tuxedo, his
hands resting in his pockets. He wasn’t sitting at the VIP head table with his father or Julianna; he was standing alone among the general crowd,
watching her with a quiet, intense pride.
When the ceremony concluded and the guests moved to the reception area, Clara immediately looked for him through the crowd. She slipped past
congratulating directors and flashing cameras, heading toward the back exit.
She found Ethan standing outside on the terrace, looking down at the illuminated Seine River flowing quietly through Paris. The cool French breeze
carried the soft melody of an accordion playing nearby.
“You came to Paris,” Clara said softly, stepping onto the balcony.
Ethan turned slowly around. There was no cold mask on his face tonight—only a profound, weary honesty.
“I wouldn’t miss the biggest moment of your life, Clara,” Ethan replied, his voice low and raspy. “I promised myself I would stay in the shadows
so I wouldn’t ruin your night with more rumors… but I needed to see you.”
Clara walked closer to him, stopping right at the marble balustrade. “These past two weeks… it felt like I was winning everything in my career,
but losing the only thing that actually made it feel meaningful.”
Ethan looked at her, startled by her confession. He took a slow breath, stepping closer until only inches separated them.
“I tried to convince myself that staying away from you was protecting you,” Ethan murmured, his dark eyes searching hers. “My father threatened to
strip my voting rights on the board. Julianna’s family tried to sabotage our European distribution. But standing in that hall tonight, watching
you hold that award, I realized something.”
“What did you realize?” Clara asked, her breath catching.
Ethan reached out, gently cupping the side of her face, his warm thumb softly tracing her cheekbone.
“I realized that a life without you isn’t a life worth protecting,” Ethan said, his voice thick with emotion. “I don’t care about the board. I
don’t care about the family alliance. If I have to walk away from Vance Global to be with you, I’ll do it tonight.”
Clara felt tears prickling her eyes, her heart overflowing with a mixture of relief and overwhelming affection. She covered his hand with her own,
leaning into his touch.
“Don’t walk away from your empire, Ethan,” Clara whispered, a brave smile breaking through her tears. “Stand and fight for it… but this time,
fight with me by your side.”
Ethan smiled—a beautiful, unreserved smile that lit up his eyes—and pulled her close, wrapping his arms securely around her waist as Paris glowed
around them.
