Chapter 8: A Moment of Vulnerability

Julianna walked gracefully toward them, her high heels clicking softly on the marble floor. Her eyes swept over Clara with a cool, condescending

gaze before settling on Ethan.

“Your father asked me to fly in from Paris for the gala,” Julianna said smoothly, resting her hand possessively on Ethan’s forearm. “He felt it

was time we made an appearance together before the board next week.”

Clara felt a sudden knot form in her stomach. The contrast between Julianna’s effortless high-society aura and her own felt overwhelming.

“I’ll leave you two to talk,” Clara said quickly, pulling her dress slightly as she stepped back toward the balcony doors. “Goodnight, Ethan.”

“Clara, wait—” Ethan called out, reaching to stop her, but Julianna kept her grip on his arm, whispering something urgent in his ear about his

family’s company board.

Clara didn’t look back. She rushed down the grand museum staircase, grabbed her coat from the cloakroom, and slipped out into the cool London

rain. She called a cab, her thoughts spinning. Why did it hurt so much? She had known Ethan was from a different world, but seeing Julianna made

the distance between them painfully clear.

An hour later, Clara sat on her apartment couch in sweatpants, staring at a mug of warm tea as the rain tapped against her windowpane.

Suddenly, her doorbell rang.

Clara frowned, looking at the clock. It was nearly 1:30 AM. She walked over and opened the door cautiously.

Standing in the hallway, dripping wet from the pouring rain, was Ethan. His bow tie was undone, his jacket was soaked, and his dark hair was

plastered to his forehead. He looked completely unraveled—a sight Clara had never imagined seeing.

“Ethan? What happened to you?” Clara asked in shock, opening the door wider.

Ethan stepped into the foyer, his breath heavy. “I left the gala right after you. I’ve been looking for you.”

“You shouldn’t be here,” Clara said, her voice trembling slightly as she grabbed a dry towel and handed it to him. “Julianna—”

“Julianna is the daughter of my father’s business partner,” Ethan interrupted, stepping closer, ignoring the towel in his hands. “My father has

been trying to force an arranged alliance between our families for three years to merge our European assets. I have refused every single time.”

Clara looked into his intense, vulnerable eyes. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because my world is full of fake relationships and calculated moves, Clara,” Ethan said softly, taking her hands in his cold, damp ones. “When I

am with you, everything is real. Your honesty, your passion, your smile… you are the only real thing in my life right now.”

Clara’s chest tightened with emotion. All her doubts dissolved under the truth in his voice.

“Ethan…”

Without waiting another second, Ethan leaned down, cupping her face with his warm hands, and brought his lips to hers. The kiss was gentle at

first, filled with unspoken longings, before deepening into a passionate, breathtaking moment that left them both breathless.
