Chapter 2: The Wolf Beyond the Border
I ran.
I didn’t look back.
Not once.
The forest swallowed me almost immediately, its ancient trees blocking the pale moonlight above.
Branches scratched against my arms.
Roots caught my feet.
My lungs burned.
But I kept running.
Behind me, the howls grew louder.
They weren’t ordinary wolves.
I could feel their presence.
They were hunting me.
And whatever they wanted…
I knew it wasn’t mercy.
“Faster!”
The old woman’s voice echoed in my memory.
Run north.
Find the last Black Moon Alpha.
Kael Draven.
I had never heard that name before tonight.
Yet somehow, my wolf reacted whenever I thought about it.
She became restless.
Curious.
Almost afraid.
Who is Kael? I asked her.
She didn’t answer.
Instead, she pushed me forward.
North.
I stumbled over a fallen tree and crashed onto the ground.
Pain shot through my ankle.
I gasped.
“Come on…”
I tried to stand.
My ankle wouldn’t support me.
Behind me, branches snapped.
They were close.
Very close.
I looked around desperately.
There was nowhere to hide.
Then I noticed a narrow opening between two enormous trees.
I crawled inside.
The space was barely large enough for my body.
I covered my mouth and held my breath.
Seconds passed.
Then shadows moved between the trees.
Wolves.
Five.
No…
Ten.
Their eyes glowed red beneath the moonlight.
I had never seen wolves like them.
They weren’t wearing the colors of any pack I recognized.
One of them sniffed the air.
“She’s close.”
Another growled.
“The Alpha wants her alive.”
My heart stopped.
The Alpha?
Which Alpha?
Damon?
The Alpha King?
Someone else?
I pressed my hand over my mouth.
The black mark on my wrist suddenly burned.
I looked down.
The crescent moon was glowing faintly.
One of the wolves turned toward me.
His head snapped in my direction.
“There!”
I froze.
The wolves charged.
I crawled out from beneath the trees and forced myself to run.
My injured ankle screamed with every step.
I didn’t care.
A wolf jumped.
I ducked.
Its claws sliced through my sleeve.
I screamed and kept moving.
Another wolf lunged.
Something inside me exploded.
A wave of silver energy burst from my body.
The wolf was thrown backward.
I stared at my hands.
“What…”
The other wolves stopped.
For the first time, they looked afraid.
One whispered:
“She’s awakened.”
The others backed away.
I didn’t understand.
But I wasn’t waiting for an explanation.
I ran.
The forest suddenly became steeper.
The trees disappeared.
I reached the edge of a cliff.
I stopped.
My heart dropped.
There was nowhere else to go.
Behind me, the wolves emerged from the forest.
Ten pairs of red eyes stared at me.
Their leader stepped forward.
“Elara Vale.”
I swallowed.
“Who are you?”
“You don’t need to know.”
“Then why are you hunting me?”
He smiled.
“Because your blood belongs to our master.”
My stomach twisted.
“Who is your master?”
The wolf shifted.
A tall man stood where the wolf had been.
His face was covered by a black mask.
But his voice was unmistakably human.
“The man who has been waiting for you.”
He raised his hand.
“Take her.”
I stepped backward.
My heel touched empty air.
The cliff.
I looked down.
It was at least fifty feet.
The masked man smiled.
“Nowhere to run.”
I looked behind me.
Then down.
Then back at the wolves.
There was only one choice.
I jumped.
The world disappeared.
Wind slammed against my body.
I screamed.
My stomach twisted as the ground rushed toward me.
Then—
Something caught me.
A powerful arm wrapped around my waist.
I opened my eyes.
A man was holding me.
We were falling.
But he wasn’t afraid.
His dark hair whipped across his face.
His silver eyes met mine.
For one impossible second…
Everything stopped.
I knew those eyes.
Not because I had seen them before.
Because my wolf recognized them.
Mate.
The word exploded inside my mind.
The man looked at me.
His expression changed.
“You.”
We hit a massive tree branch.
He twisted his body, taking the impact.
Then we landed hard on the forest floor.
I gasped.
He stood immediately.
The wolves above us howled.
The stranger looked toward them.
“Go back.”
His voice was quiet.
But the wolves froze.
The masked man appeared at the cliff edge.
“Kael.”
My heart stopped.
Kael.
The last Black Moon Alpha.
Kael Draven looked up at him.
“You shouldn’t have crossed my border.”
The masked man laughed.
“The girl belongs to the king.”
Kael’s eyes became dangerously cold.
“She belongs to no one.”
The masked man stepped forward.
“You can’t protect her forever.”
Kael’s wolf appeared in his eyes.
“Try me.”
The wolves attacked.
Kael moved faster than anything I had ever seen.
One wolf flew through the air.
Another crashed into a tree.
The masked man shifted and attacked him directly.
Their wolves collided.
The impact shook the ground.
I stood frozen.
Kael’s wolf was enormous.
Black fur.
Silver eyes.
A scar running from his left eye to his jaw.
He was terrifying.
Beautiful.
Powerful.
And somehow…
Familiar.
The battle lasted less than a minute.
Kael grabbed the masked wolf by the throat.
“Tell your master something.”
The wolf struggled.
“What?”
Kael’s voice dropped.
“She is under my protection now.”
He threw him into the darkness.
The remaining wolves fled.
Silence returned.
Kael shifted back.
He turned toward me.
For the first time, I saw him clearly.
He was taller than Damon.
Broader.
His face was sharp and serious.
A black scar ran across his collarbone.
But it was his eyes that frightened me.
Because they were looking at me as though they already knew me.
“You shouldn’t have come here.”
I frowned.
“I didn’t exactly choose to.”
“You should have stayed away from the border.”
“I was exiled.”
His jaw tightened.
“I know.”
I stared at him.
“You know?”
“Everyone knows what happened tonight.”
My heart sank.
“Then you know my father was accused of murder.”
“Yes.”
“Do you believe he was guilty?”
Kael didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“No.”
I stopped breathing.
“How do you know?”
“Because I knew him.”
My eyes widened.
“You knew my father?”
Kael looked away.
“He saved my life.”
I took a step toward him.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I wasn’t supposed to find you yet.”
“Find me?”
He looked back at me.
“You were never supposed to discover the Black Moon this way.”
My wrist burned again.
Kael’s eyes immediately dropped toward it.
The moment he saw the mark, his entire expression changed.
He grabbed my wrist.
I pulled away.
“What are you doing?”
His fingers trembled.
“That’s impossible.”
“What?”
He stared at the crescent mark.
“The mark hasn’t appeared in over five hundred years.”
I swallowed.
“What does it mean?”
Kael looked directly into my eyes.
“It means you’re the last heir of the Black Moon.”
I remembered the old woman’s words.
But hearing them from him made them real.
“My mother?”
“Black Moon blood.”
“My father?”
“Guardian.”
“And me?”
Kael’s expression softened.
“You…”
He stopped.
“What?”
He looked away.
“You’re something no one expected.”
“What does that mean?”
Before he could answer, a howl echoed through the forest.
Kael immediately turned toward the mountains.
“What now?”
His expression became serious.
“They’re coming.”
“Who?”
“The king’s army.”
My blood turned cold.
“How many?”
Kael looked toward the horizon.
“Thousands.”
I stared at him.
“Then what are we going to do?”
Kael looked at me.
“You?”
He stepped closer.
“You are going to learn how to survive.”
“And you?”
His silver eyes met mine.
“I’m going to make sure they regret coming for you.”
My wolf stirred again.
Mate.
This time, I heard something else beneath the word.
A bond.
A pull.
Something ancient.
I stepped backward.
“No.”
Kael frowned.
“What?”
“I can’t.”
“Can’t what?”
“Have another mate.”
His expression froze.
I swallowed.
“I just lost one.”
Kael’s jaw tightened.
“I know.”
“I can’t go through that again.”
He remained silent.
Then he said something I wasn’t expecting.
“I’m not Damon.”
My eyes filled with tears.
“I know.”
“Then don’t punish me for what he did.”
I looked at him.
For a long moment, neither of us spoke.
Then Kael slowly extended his hand.
“Come with me, Elara.”
I looked at his hand.
Then at the mountains.
Then toward the direction of the Blackthorn Pack.
Everything I had known was behind me.
Everything I didn’t know was ahead.
I placed my hand in his.
The instant our skin touched—
A shockwave of silver light exploded through the forest.
Kael staggered.
I gasped.
Our wolves roared simultaneously.
The mark on my wrist spread upward.
A second symbol appeared on Kael’s palm.
A black crescent.
He stared at it.
Then at me.
His face had gone pale.
“What?”
I whispered.
Kael slowly closed his hand.
“We’re bonded.”
“But you said—”
“I know what I said.”
He looked toward the sky.
The moon had turned crimson.
Kael’s voice became almost a whisper.
“The prophecy has started.”
“What prophecy?”
He looked at me.
“The one that says the Black Moon heir will either save the werewolf world…”
His eyes darkened.
“Or destroy it.”
A distant horn sounded.
The king’s army was coming.
Kael pulled me behind him.
“Stay close.”
I looked at his back.
For the first time since Damon rejected me…
I didn’t feel alone.
But I also knew something terrifying.
My old life had ended tonight.
And whatever came next…
Would change the entire werewolf world.
Forever.
